Ancient Mould

Born out of a stew of sketches and scribbles in old notebooks, Ancient Mould aka. Ben Miles began painting after stumbling upon a stack of blank canvases in a new attic and a box of worn acrylics from a friend. With no formal training and no clear plan, painting quickly became instinctive - a release, a way to pick apart the mind and make sense of its noise. What started in 2022 as curiosity became a ritual; a place of refuge and repair.

Working mainly with acrylics and pastels, their process is intuitive and unpredictable, trusting whatever surfaces through colour, texture, and impulse. Each piece grows from fragments of life - childhood memories, music, record sleeves, cut-up poetry, folklore, and the rough edges of pop and outsider culture. The work carries the energy of discovery, raw and unfiltered, sitting somewhere between reflection and rebellion.
